Atlanta rapper Rel wants to make one thing clear—he can stand on his own two. In a city where local success is easy, but getting national exposure seems to to be an dream. Rel is looking like to he's to be the first to local fame into a brand name without the aid of another crew in a long time. His company, Young Rich Music Group , has just signed an independent production deal, which allows him to distribute his own artists—including upcoming Dallas rapper Monte Carlos—and Houston R&B singer Trell. Rel’s album, Remember Me, is set to expand on the buzz he set in motion with last year's slept-on "In My Life" mixtape. Rel checked in with hiphopheart.com for an brief video interview. Here is the interview in print
Have heard the things that Shantel said about you on ?. What do you feel about the situation?Rel: Yeah. I heard what she said. Really. I'm not worried about her. She isn't a threat. Somebody go tell shawty go get this money and mind her business.
I feel that she just is trying to be in the public eye. I mean. I wasn't even talking about her and she just jumped in. Shawty must got an album or something coming out.
You started out as a rapper clearly, but you’ve grown so much more on the business side. How hard is it to balance that out?Rel: It was an natural transition. Nobody to help with this music shit I was doing. So I was like I can be my own boss because nobody gone push for you like yourself.
How do you feel about Jay-C and Matty?Rel: Who? I know who Matty is but the other dude is an nobody. Matty. I mean got his own lane and I my own lane. We aren't the same. Different lifestyles, ya know. I really don't have a problem with him. Just ain't like the comments he made but its ight. Oh yeah. Who was the other guy (Laughs)
Did you ever reach out to any of them about that incident?Rel:Who? Shantel or Matty?
Either one.
Rel: Look man, I don’t give a fuck about them dudes saying nothing about me. They nobodys ain’t no threat. The streets behind me so fuck em.
I also heard you were doing a mixtape with DJ A1.Rel: Its already finished.
Really? When did you start on it?Rel: Last night. I went in the studio and just did tracks for like 15 hours straight.
Is there any diss songs on the mixtape?Rel: Nah. I mean I aint feel the need to. I said everything I need to bout them its all on the table. That doesn't mean I can't get on their ass with a track if I want.
