“I grew up in Rio Piedras, San Juan Puerto Rico, at the Laguna View towers. Probably one of the worst places in Puerto Rico. The building name was actually unlisted. That’s how bad it is. We called it los “Chinitas” because at the time the color of the two building were orange. Til this day kids walk with guns like they’re toy guns. It’s pretty heartbreaking what I see. But it’s getting better and they recently remodeled the place, as you can see in the picture I brought. I’m really proud of the community.

At the time, we lived on the tenth floor and I used to love seeing the laguna from up there, that was probably one of the best things about the place. But when our neighbor’s kid jumped out of the window and killed himself, my mom grew terrified because me and my sisters were young. So we moved down to the first floor. When we did things got worse. We had no AC and the heat would definitely get to us. It was very rough.

Rent was free, because if it weren’t it would be impossible for us to afford the little bit of food and things we had. We depended on school to eat breakfast and lunch and we had a lot of chores and rules to follow. We were strong as family and we worked together to make sure we made the best out of our lives. We hardly ever had Christmas or birthday presents, because my mom was raising money for us to move back to New York. Whining about that would get you a good slap in the face from my mother. (Giggles)

It’s so amazing the name because "Rio Piedras (River of Rocks in English) truly represented the pueblo (town) as a whole. We were all strugglers and it felt like we were sailing on a river of rocks. I mean, Imagine that.

When I lived in Puerto Rico. That was life to me. What me and my sisters saw on television, we never thought it was real. We just thought that United States was a dream land in heaven. Then growing up, we realized it was an actual place. At the time, we didn’t think about it much, but when we did all we thought was that being there would be a dream. You have Disney world and all this other commercialized stuff. It seemed so unreal to us.

I am proud where I came from, because it made me a strong person. Not many people would understand why I have pride, but as my grandfather says, "unless you go through our tunnel, you won’t see the light we see."

You know what I realized in this industry and business. A lot of people have decided to give me the cold shoulder and their egos have really gotten to them, But my skin is made of fire. I will stay strong and I will continue to be myself. I don’t need friends. I'm happy where I am right now. I appreciate everything I have.

The name of the album will be called “Rio Piedras”. In Enlgish Translation that is “River of Rocks“. Obviously, inspired by the place I grew up on.
