The Unbearable Loneliness Of A Modern Day Bohemian

BIOGRAPHY

Brandon Caulfield was born in Seattle, Washington on February 12th 1987. Caulfield is the only son of Renée and Robert Caulfield. He has lived in Seattle all of his life and is of Irish and French descent. His great grandfather moved his family from Dublin to Seattle in the early 40’s and his mothers family moved from Calais, France to New York in 1962.
Caulfield was brought up around music from an early age and his first memory’s of music was his mother playing Brigitte Bardot records but it was after hearing a collaboration between Brigitte Bardot & Serge Gainsbourg when he started to become obsessed with music.
His father was a more conventional rock fan and this affected Brandon’s music education, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Tom Petty, Van Morrison and Eric Clapton are all heavily embedded into Brandon’s memories of his childhood and have now became big influences on his own style.

He was always an outsider at school from a very early age and quickly came to resent the people around him, often isolating him in his bedroom for hours, his parents often tried to get him into therapy to figure out why he was so content on being isolated from the real world.
And when he became a teenager, the pressure’s to fit in at school and be popular continued to fuel his resentment for his fellow teenagers, he continued to isolate himself and has stated that he only ever had one close friend called Isabel.
He would spend almost all of his free time in his room reading and scribbling down things on paper and writing down almost everything that popped into his head, it was during this period when he started to learn his craft as a songwriter and soon decided to take up guitar, his parents chose not to buy him a guitar, stating that school was more important than trying to be John Lennon. He therefore decided to take matters into his own hands and stole an acoustic guitar from a record store during a trip to Los Angeles, claiming he found it on the street whenever asked by his parents about it.

He dropped out of school at 16 with no grades and he took a job as a cleaner at a local shopping mall, he recalls that he’d often see former school students and says that the look that they gave him while cleaning the floors is the fuel he uses to become “a better person than they’ll ever be.”
He held down this job for 3 years and at the age of 19 he decided to attempt to make it in music, playing various small clubs in the local area, often playing to maximum crowds of 15 people. He stated that although it was tough financially, the freedom of it was the thing he had been searching for all his life.

His education in the form of formal qualifications is non existent but his education as a person is what makes him unique, his fondness for literacy and poetry is almost obsessive, often quoting Edgar Allan Poe and Jack Kerouac during performances, he has self destructive periods in his life, often disappearing for months to isolate himself and is often searching for clarity in his life, he has described himself as a loose cannon but stopped to point out that he isn’t violent in the slightest.

As a performer his style is very recognizable for it’s intensity and his dark vocals, he is shy and retiring at the best of times and struggles with self doubt.
He is now planning a music career and is looking for a record label, but until then he will continue to perform wherever will have him.

1. Sketches In The Form Of Words (4:37)

This is the first song I ever wrote, it’s been tampered with and changed in so many ways over the years but this is my current adaptation of it, As with the majority of my songs, it’s essentially just me at the piano, I don’t have layers and layers of different stuff on it, it’s a pretty raw version of the song, It’s just me laid bare, my voice and the keys of the piano.
In terms of what the song is about, it’s just about letting go of everything. There’s times in everyone’s life when they just wanna go kinda crazy and just smash their home up and just go crazy, however, many people hold back and just get on with things. There’s no harm in getting angry and just destroying everything in your path, it gives you a warm feeling inside your soul.

2. The One That Got Away (3:17)

It’s the opposite of what it seems like. I don’t believe in the notion that there’s only one person your destined to be with, even if it was a true notion the chances of you finding that person is maybe a 0.5% likelihood, don’t get me wrong, I’m a dreamer but there’s some things I just won’t believe in.
So yeah it’s a song about a guy who believes he’s found “the one” but after she leaves him, he ends up finding another “one”.
Again vocally it’s just me laid bare, vocals and the keys of the piano again, It also has this crazy emotional chorus which will hopefully translate well to live performances and hopefully if people listen to it and they’ve maybe been in a bad break up, they could put this on and realise that there’s a hope out there somewhere.

3. Overdue Dreams (5:48)

It’s essentially the story of someone who has been knocked down so much from life, not specifically music but just in general. The world can sometimes be the most painful place to be but it can also be the most beautiful place to be at times, you could have no family and be dying of a terminal illness and the smallest thing can give you hope and make you believe again like you did when you were a kid, it’s sort of about regaining that kind of childhood innocence.
This is the first song I ever wrote with a guitar, of course back then it was very different from how it is now, I’ve worked hard on improving these songs over the past few years and they continue to be developed and tinkered with and modified, it‘s hard to find that fine line between perfection and overkill.

4. Tim (6:03)

I’ve always been fascinated about story’s in music, it’s sort of autobiographical, intentionally and sometimes unintentionally, there’s always a part of my life that creeps into my writing. It’s me and an acoustic guitar for this one and I feel that it has a darker edge when played on the piano but it feels more free on an acoustic guitar, still haven’t quite made my mind up on which one I prefer using.
The song is about a fictional character, with elements of me in him, called Tim. He’s a young guy just trying to find his way, he’s seen life at the darkest moments and he’s seen life at the brightest moments. He’s seen the towers fall and he’s seen so much destruction, but every now and then he sees an act of kindness that makes him believe in the good in the world. It’s a recurring theme in my writing and that’s because it’s part of what I’ve felt in my own life.

5. Alléluia (8:32)

It’s my attempt at an epic, If there’s a story in your mind that needs to be told, does it matter if nobody hears it? I’ve debated a lot about performing this song because there’s a purity and innocence about this song and I kinda feel like the innocence and purity of the song will almost, vanish into nothingness when it’s out in the public and open to all sorts of miss interpretation. But the way I hear this song is and the way I would describe this song would be like the song where I’ve almost rediscovered those adolescent definitions of love and freedom.
It’s a song about escaping your own personal hell, with your girl by your side and the roof down on your car, no clothes but what you have on your shoulders, no money, no possessions and just the kind of freedom we were always supposed to have, My own personal inspiration for this song is the novel, Into The Wild and my own personal experiences.

I hope these descriptions have helped in some way, I think describing my music is a little like having sex, you know, like how do you describe it? Are you supposed to?

"I'll be performing some rather small venues, I've been able to tempt the owners of each respective venue to let me play some of my songs free of charge, so I guess it's better than nothing right, at least it means people will be able to hear my music. So if your in those towns during one of those dates then please drop in for a coffee and listen to a little music. Next stop Madison Square Gardens."

"So my E.P is finished, recorded at home. Despite the release date being the 18th December, I've decided to get some IT geeks to make it available to download online for free from tonight, so it's worth it surely, even if it sucks you can just delete it ... we all love free stuff right. Anyway, I'm off to Ohio to perform at the Café Del Mar, It's not ideal but got to find somewhere to perform, at least I'll be indoors. Anyway I've bored you enough. Goodbye."

Brandon: So everyone ... Ummm ... well ... I recorded a Christmas single ... I know I'm not exactly the type to record a Christmas single but ... I thought I'd get into the christmas spirit ... despite my hatred for the baby jesus. ... Oh yeah and the song I recorded ... was Silent Night. I tried to make it ... as spooky as I could.

Hello Mr. Caulfield,
My name is J.R Rhythm. I am the frontman for The Bards. I just wanted to extend my appreciation for your music. I also would like to offer you a possible label. The Bards are currently in a huge album war with The Rockers. After the album we are gonna take a rest. With this downtime I would like to start my own small label. I'm going to start with only one artist and focus all my attention on him/her. I want you to be that one artist. I can promise you that I will promote your work and work with you one on one with making great music. Are you interested?

"So hey guys, I'm gonna be signing to a brand new record label created by JR Rhythm. It's a lot of pressure for me to be the only act on the lable and to have JR Rhythm focus most of his attention on me, not sure how I feel about world domination yet but I think I can handle it. Also thanks Hannah for helping me come to a decision." - Brandon

"I've just signed a record deal with J R Rhythm's new label. Looking forward to it, also I've been writing with Hannah Beth for a possible collaboration in the future and I'm going to be recording my first full length album. Also my cover of Silent Night actually charted, how crazy is that. It came in at 13 on the top20 christmas airplay chart. So have a good new year and we'll see what happens."

Brandon: First of all thanks, that's very kind of you to say so. I would say your sort of correct with that observation, don't get me wrong I can perform in front of crowds of people relatively easily, you know, but I would say I'm almost reluctant to become some sort of star, If I can achieve success on my own terms then that's great but if any kind of success is sort of thrust onto me without me deserving it then that's when I'd get uncomfortable. It's tough to explain though.
