LIVE FROM MERRIWEATHER POST PAVILLION, COLUMBIA

It’s almost 9am and the first act on the bill today is a rather unknown entity, Brandon Caulfield yet to release an album but there seems to be a little bit of buzz around him, already garnering fans like Glamazon, Radio Vine and JR Rhythm, he steps out onto the Merriweather, Post Pavilion stage on a freezing cold January morning, he sits at the piano located towards the left of the stage and speaks into the microphone.

“Well … this is kinda … intimidating. Guess now that I’m here I can’t just leave. This is called Into The Wild.” he explains to the pretty sizable crowd, evidently the biggest crowd he has played in front of, usually performing to maybe 35 people at most in small café’s and bar’s.
He then begins to play into his first song, Into The Wild. It’s slow and eerie piano intro seemingly a very low energy start to what will no doubt be a long day. It’s lyrics are about escapism and I imagine it’s pretty close to how Brandon himself feels. The fans begin to liven up mid-way through the song as the pace starts to pick up and although they’ve heard of the song before, (it’s unreleased as yet) they manage to enjoy it enough.

After the first song, He stops briefly to take a mouthful of water before adjusting the microphone and speaks to the audience, “So this is the first song I ever wrote, it’s been tampered with and changed in so many ways over the years but this is my current adaptation of it, It’s called Sketches In The Form Of Words.” Another haunting piano introduction adds to the mystery and intrigue of this guy, It’s a song about going crazy, destroying everything in your path without worrying about the consequences.

He steps away from the piano and picks up his acoustic guitar before stepping up to the microphone, “This is a song about finding good in a world of bad, it’s called Tim.” He plays the song with the freedom which the prior songs just didn’t allow, the fans are more than pleased with the sudden change of pace.
It’s lyrics reference the difficult past 10 years the world has had to endure and ends in a positive mood, I don’t want to give too much away for people who haven’t heard it yet but it’s a surprising ending to the song.

He stops briefly again before heading over to the microphone, “So Ummm, my music is inspired by a lot of bands and artists no more so than The Beatles. So for this next I’m gonna need a little bit of help from a friend, please welcome … Hannah Beth.”
They both smile at each other before Brandon plays a guitar intro to The Beatles Don’t Let Me Down sharing vocals and the crowd join in, finally some music they can sing along to, as the song comes to a close Brandon heads over to the piano to begin another two Beatles songs, Let It Be and I Want To Hold Your Hand, providing a injection of energy into the crowd so early in the morning and as the medley draws to a close he heads over to Hannah and they share a hug before she heads off backstage again.

He switches from an acoustic to an electric guitar for the final three songs. “This is called Dream On, Young One.” the crowd cheer as he plays an almost recognizable intro to the song and he provides a very unexpected rock frontman type of vocal and uses the stage well for the first time today, clearly becoming more comfortable in front of the large crowd now, often making his way back and forth across the stage. He ends the song on his knees following an almost Zeppelin-esque solo before making his way back onto his feet.

He returns to centre stage, “This is probably the most autobiographical song I’ve written so far, so please bare with me. It’s called Overdue Dreams.”
He performs the song like a pro until mid-way through the song he puts the guitar down and finishes the song accapella encouraging the crowd to sing along to the chorus with him, creating a gospel like sound and atmosphere.

He sits at the piano once more for the final song of his set, Fireflies In The Garden. Performing the song as if he’s been doing it for twenty years but in reality it’s the first time he’s ever performed it live. A Rousing finale of the song is enough for him to have made an impression on the crowd today and his could be a star on the rise.

Live From The Merriweather Pavillion, Columbia MD

It's noon and as Brandon Caulfield leaves the stage, smoke fills the small area and two figures wearing hoodies emerge as shadows when multiple lights begin to flash around the stage. The figure to the left begins to strum his guitar as it is the beginning to a familiar song, "Teenage Riot" by Sonic Youth.

The figure to the left pulls her hood to reveal that she's Laura Paige, frontwoman to BOOK OF LOVE. She skips the opening verse while her partner, Peter Hampshire continues strumming. Laura glides over to the mic and opens her mouth, "Hello Columbia! How are you doing!?" The overwhelming mass screams back in ecstasy. "Good! We're Book of Love and that was Brandon Caulfield! How did you feel about him!?" The crowd screams back again, in a smorgasborge of cheers and claps. "Awesome! Now, check your watch. It's Noon and from now until 2 O' Clock we own your asses! We're starting out on a high note, you remember this as an AATW favorite: TEENAGE RIOT!" The crowd shouts back in happiness as Laura backs up to her drumset. As the opening riff to the second verse starts Laura begins to hammer down on her drumset and looks up to her mic.

Everybody's talking 'bout the stormy weather
And what's a man do to but work out whether it's true?
Looking for a man with a focus and a temper
Who can open up a map and see between one and two

Time to get it
Before you let it
Get to you

Here he comes now
Stick to your guns
And let him through

The crowd cheers as the band finishes their fourth song. "OK, Columbia! You ready for some Grunge!?". Ba-dum Tish! Laura goes for a rimshot on her drumset as the crowd erupts once more. "This is a special, heartfelt song that goes out to Sara Daniels! What a bitch!". She nods over to Peter who begins to strum the chords to a familiar song, "EVEN FLOW" by Pearl Jam. "This is not a TV Studio, JOSH!" She screams out as the Crowd screams back with cheers, "This is a fucking rock concert, turn those lights out!" The opening strums contain you as Pete bangs his head, hair flying in front of him and a few mosh pits can be spotted in the crowd. Laura comes in with her drums, her lips approaching the mic.

Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again.
Oh, feelin' maybe he'll see a little better set a days, ooh yeah
Oh hand out faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar, ooh yeah
Oh, dark grin he can't help when he's happy, looks insane ooh

The riff changes, to that of the chorus and Laura's drumming does as well as she swing her head up and down,

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know so he chases them away-yeah
Oh, someday, yea, he'll begin his life again
Life again, Life again

Finishing up their 8th song, they move to their ninth. Taking a brief interlude. "Thanks, you guys have been great." Laura says through her microphone. "We're moving onto our final song, our times almost done, so we're going to end it slow and meaningful." Peter begins to strum a slow tune, that of "Today" by Jefferson Airplane. Laura picks her mic up off of its stand and begins to walk around the stage,

Today I feel like pleasing you more than before
Today I know what I want to do but I don't know what for
To be living for you is all I want to do
To be loving you it'll all be there when my dreams come true
Today you'll make me say that I somehow have changed
Today you'll look into my eyes, I'm just not the same

She waves her hands up, "You're wonderful Columbia,

To be anymore than all I am would be a lie
I'm so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry
Today everything you want, I swear it all will come true
Today I realize how much I'm in love with you
With you standing here I could tell the world what it means to love
To go on from here I can't use words, they don't say enough
Please, please listen to me
It's taken so long to come true
And it's all for you
all for you....

She bows her head, "Thank you Maryland. We love you!" Peter shouts out as the lights dim down.
