The Wildflowers Live From The Hollywood Palladium
[Launch Show - 2/26/11]
UserPostedImage

It’s a sunny evening in the Hollywood hills tonight and in a packed out Hollywood Palladium, 4,000 fans are set to witness the debut of a promising new band called The Wildflowers. In February of this year the band signed their first ever record deal with Shooting Aces Records and have since locked themselves away in a recording studio in Los Angeles, California to begin writing some songs together and tonight they’re set to debut them for this energetic and expectant audience. After weeks of hype surrounding this launch gig, the band will have no doubt felt the pressure and it’s time to see if they can deliver.
After almost 45 minutes since the crowd have been let into the venue, the lights finally go off, you can feel the anticipation as the crowd begin screaming, the backlight kicks into action as the rest of the stage is in darkness, out walks each of the band members, Josh Dalton on drums, Scott Armstrong on Bass, Alex Perry-Jones on guitar and vocals and Tyler Jackson on guitar and vocals.
The crowd go silent as the stage remains dark, the crowd only able to see the silhouettes of each member amid the darkness and a steady drum beat begins and a guitar chord is struck. The spotlights finally come on, showing Tyler and Alex standing centre stage sharing a microphone as they begin.

Alex: How is everyone doing tonight.

As Alex shouts into the microphone, the crowd go crazy and the band begins it’s debut performance.

“ Hey, ho, welcome to the show
Hey, ho, welcome to the show
In a couple of hours, we’re gonna have to go
But hey, ho, welcome to the show.

We’re gonna make you smile
We’re gonna make you sing
But in reality, there’s only one place to begin
So everybody sing.

Hey, ho, welcome to the show
Hey, ho, welcome to the show.

We’re gonna make you smile
We’re gonna make you sing
We’re gonna make you love us
We’re gonna be king

Hey, ho, welcome to the show.”

As the crowd sing along with the albeit simple chorus, the song quickly finishes, it’s only an introduction song after all.

Tyler: (screams) HOLLYWOOD!!!!! LIGHTEN UP!!!!!

The next song on the Setlist Lighten Up begins with four powerful drum beats before Scott, Alex and Tyler all move into action. The band seem content on getting the crowd involved as much as possible tonight, the two frontmen often moving to the edge of the stage, stretching their hands out for the fans to take a hold of.
Alex belts out the chorus as loudly as he possibly can.

“When life get’s tough
And love ain’t enough
Force a smile, because in a while
HOLLYWOOD!!!!! You’ll learn to lighten up.

Lighten up, Lighten Up
When life tries to f**k you up
Just lighten up, just lighten up”

The crowd seem to be rising to levels of hysteria right now and the band members continually look at each other during the performance and smile as they acknowledge the craziness of the audience. As the drum beat slows down gradually, the crowd seem to go quiet with it and before too long, the whole venue is in complete silence as Alex Perry steps up to the very edge of the stage, holding a microphone.

Alex: (Whispers) I Got A Secret For You.

The band quickly begin to play into the song of the same name and the crowd rises to the high volume levels of the prior song. With Alex and Tyler sharing one microphone together for the song. The crowd cheer throughout the song and the band show their comfort, using the stage to full effect for the first time this evening, during breaks in music Tyler runs to one side of the stage and waves his right arm from side to side, encouraging the crowd to do so, creating a wave effect.
Scott Armstrong receives a scarf thrown in his direction and raises a smile for the fan who through it and during a brief break, he ties the scarf to his own microphone stand. The song comes to an end and the crowd continue to cheer.

The band then quickly thunder their way into the next song as Alex screams out the name of the track, “Down The Road!.” It’s pop melody’s and thrashing guitar solo’s provide the perfect mix of pop and rock all tied together by the thunderous, incessant pounding of Josh Dalton’s drums and the rhythmic bass playing of Scott Armstrong. It looks like a perfect mix and it looks like this band has the material to back up the image. A heavy guitar solo and a pop friendly chorus later and the band have performed three possible hit singles. The potential is certainly there.

The band take a brief break as Alex talks to the crowd while the other band members leave the stage pretty briefly to switch their instruments for slightly different versions of what they had previously and evidently a costume change.

Alex: How’s everyone doing tonight? (Met with cheers) … So we’re pretty new, as most of you are aware, this is our first ever major live performance together and I think it’s going pretty well right now (met with more cheers).

The other band members return to the stage sporting bizarre fairytale-esque costumes, Scott is wearing a large novelty hat and Alex decides to clue the audience in.

Alex: This next song is called, Alice’s Wonderland.

Tyler is standing slightly further to the left side of the stage, standing behind a keyboard and he begins the song with a very dreamy kinda magical sounding keyboard intro. And then the full band kick into action, creating an almost carnival atmosphere, with the band members almost on the verge of laughing during breaks from the vocals and even providing a rather humorous dance routine where they all stood centre stage kicking their legs from left to right while Josh used his drumming as a filler for their antics.
They then returned to their instruments to finish the song in triumphant fashion, as the guitars finish with a Stairway To Heaven similarity, Josh Dalton plays the song out with a thunderous effort that Keith Moon would be proud of.

As the band quickly remove the previous costumes, Tyler steps up to the microphone and yells the name of the next song, “Amy Try Harder!” as the band return, they power their way into the next song. Clashing guitars and pounding drums continue to ignite the audience and give the band energy. They’re constantly moving at this point and the fans are loving the energy. Alex and Tyler come together and share the centre microphone for the chorus.
Scott makes his way toward the very edge of the stage lifting his bass guitar out towards the crowd as they try to tough the guitar with their outstretched arms. As the song comes towards it’s end, Alex belts out the final line of the song.
“Amy Try Harder.”

Alex has now handed his guitar to one of the stage techs and is now sat at a piano, he screams into the microphone, “HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!.” and begins to play the piano intro to a track called Sweet Baby Jesus as the band joins in, the lyrics come think and fast, almost like there is too many words in the song but the audience don’t mind at all, cheering and jumping up and down all the while. Tyler then takes over the lead vocal duties as Alex continues to play guitar, and the drum solo from Josh Dalton signals the end of the song.

Scott hands his Bass to one of the guitar techs at the side of the stage and then makes his way over to the centre of the stage, he sits down on the floor with his legs dangling over the side of the stage, within touching distance of the audience, meanwhile Alex and Tyler have switched their electric guitars for acoustics and are sat on stools slightly further from the front of the stage, they begin the acoustic song Fingertips as Scott provides vocals for the first time of the evening. He holds his hand out to the audience in front of him and a young girl won’t seem to let go, he then stands up and requests for the young girl to come up onstage.
As she arrives onstage, looking extremely excited, Scott puts his arm around her shoulder and serenades her, something she was clearly delighted about. As the song comes to an end Scott kisses the girl on the cheek and helps down back into the audience.

The band switch back to their original electric instruments as Scott continues to front the band briefly, “I don’t generally write a lot of songs, but Umm, I wrote this one. It’s called Smokescreens And Raging Queens [Welcome To Vegas]. Hope you enjoy.” The band then start playing into a very modern sounding pop punk track, similarities to PANIC! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy are all to easy to make. The band show off their youthfulness by jumping up and down and using the stage to it’s fullest, running back and forth and from side to side. Energy is clearly what this band are best at providing. The band end the song with a guitar duel between Tyler and Alex, backed up by the thunderous drumming of Josh Dalton.

As Tyler Jackson steps up to the microphone, he shouts, “I Wanna Hear You Sing.” as the band begin to play their first cover of the evening with The Beatles - Get Back. The band are in full power and Tyler fronting the band with his vocals.

”Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it couldn't last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass

Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, Jojo
Go home.”

The crowd are in full voice now, singing along to every line with a crazy level of enthusiasm. As the band plays through the song with energy and power. As the song comes to an end, the band quickly begin playing into the next song, The Kinks - Lola as Alex provides the lead vocals now.

“I met her in a club down in North Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola
C-O-L-A Cola.

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola.”

As the song progresses the humour of the song becomes evident, accompanied by facial reactions from Alex as the begin to laugh, especially at the line, “I know what I am/And I’m glad I’m a man/So is Lola.” the band play the song out before leaving the stage.

After leaving the stage for almost 1 minute, the band return to the stage, cue deafening cheers. The band get back into positions with Josh at the drums, Scott playing Bass and Tyler playing an acoustic guitar centre stage as Alex sits at the piano and he leads the band into another Beatles classic, Let It Be, providing McCartney-esque vocals.

“When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother, Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let It Be

In my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.”

The crowd are ecstatic and it continues as the band play into three more songs from The Beatles back catalogue, with Here Comes The Sun/Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band/With A Little Help From My Friends.” providing a perfect ending to what has been an incredible evening, not bad for a debut performance and hopefully many more to come in the future.
