My latest assignment for Indie Revolution Magazine was somewhat of a mouth watering prospect, I was assigned to head out Elizabethtown, Indiana an extremely small town, home to roughly 200 people, but the chance to spend time in the company of an upcoming and still relatively new artist called Brandon Caulfield who has been gaining some pretty high praise from peers including the likes of Stephanie Fierce and Glamazon. He’s something of a reclusive person, rarely does interviews but when he does they always appear to be very candid and personal, this was a daunting task for me and I was pretty nervous, until upon arriving at the studio he is working at we were quite early, 6:35am to be precise, we just thought we’d hang out, perhaps check out the studio and it’s surroundings but we noticed a youngish guy sitting outside of the studio with a bottle of water and some small pieces of bread, it turned out to be Mr. Caulfield himself and he was sitting outside feeding some ducks, we later realised that the studio is right at the bottom of a river bank and evidently Mr. Caulfield regularly spends his mornings this way (Brandon later gave our artist permission to use this image of him feeding the ducks as our article shot instead of a photo shoot as planned).
He’s a little bit of a bizarre individual as we later realised during the interview as he constantly found himself being distracted by the smallest things, often jumping out of his chair to look out across the sea for no apparent reason, anyway, here’s how the brief interview went.

So your working on your second record, correct?
Brandon: Well, I’m working on the second part of my first record.

I see and what differs from part 2 in comparison to part 1?
Brandon: Well I think part 2 is a whole lot better than part 1, but I think the two compliment each other pretty well which is essentially why I went down this route, it wouldn’t have been part 1 and part 2 if they were completely different from each other, basically if your one of the few people who purchased part 1 and enjoyed it then you’ll enjoy this one too, it’s the same sad, weepy, dark kinda stuff that I did first time around so yeah, that’s about it really.

That’s not a great piece of promotion right there?
Brandon: (laughs) That’s not my job really, to be honest.

Ok, so when can we expect this album to be released?
Brandon: Well it was planned for a June 5 release date but the recording process has been much quicker than we expected so I’d say a May 15 release date would be more likely but nothing’s 100% confirmed yet.

And you recently released the second single from Part 1 of the album, how did that go?
Brandon: From what I understand, it did pretty well. I don’t know how gauge chart success but Hannah assures me that number 8 is pretty good going, and with something that isn’t exactly commercial it apparently makes it an even bigger achievement but in all honesty, although it’s great to have that kind of response to something I put out there, I much prefer the critical kinda things, praise from my peers but in all honesty, I don’t crave that kind of attention, I like to get on with things and if someone says, “Great job.” then good if not then that’s fine too.

And you mentioned Hannah there, Would that be Hannah Beth?
Brandon: Yeah, that’s the one.

I see, now your somewhat reclusive, not a lot of people know an awful lot about you, you don’t do an awful lot of interviews, are you dating Hannah Beth?
Brandon: Well we haven’t kept things a secret, but it’s not something that I want to be the focus of attention, I will say that I’m extremely lucky and extremely happy but that’s all I’ll say about it because it’s a part of our personal life and I’d like to keep it that way, she’s an incredible person and that’s all you really need to know about it.

Ok, we’ll let it go then. So what about touring any plans?
Brandon: I think something will happen once this album is completed, I told the label that I’d rather tour in support of Part 1 and Part 2 rather than tour one and then tour the other. I’m sure there’ll be an announcement pretty soon but myself and the label have already got some things lined up for the near future but there still at a pretty early stage right now.

Right, well would you be doing a support slot first?
Brandon: Yeah, well that would be the plan. I think the label have been looking at possible options but they’re pretty particular about who I tour in support of, they want someone similar but they’ve also got some dates confirmed for me to tour as headliner, it’s only at small venue’s so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

And what kind of current music are you listening to?
Brandon: I really like Gears Of Bremen, I think they’re doing some pretty great stuff and they’re different too. I quite like a band called The Anarchists, they’re a punk rock band from England and they’re pretty good. I think Glamazon is a genius songwriter and I’m quite a fan. I quite like The Band, I think they’re pretty old school but it’s good stuff and I quite like Those Meddling Kids, I think they’re a sort of throwback to the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. And of course, you didn’t think I was gonna leave Hannah out did you, I think she’s fantastic at what she does and I think she should get more credit and I’m not being biased.

Well we wish you good luck with your upcoming album and your future releases, thanks for your time.

Glamazon: Sad, weepy and dark is why I love you, sugar! So you'll hear no complaints from me with the new material. Also, thank you for the kind words; a genius songwriter? I'm flattered. I need to see you on tour like... now.
