Title: Ashes Of Dreams We Let Die [E.P]
Release Date: 25 March 2012
Recorded: Three Crow Studios, Los Angeles, California
Genre: Alternative Rock, Acoustic, Folk, Americana
Length: 35:14
Label: Chaos Records!
Producer: Brandon Caulfield, Sarah Jade Harrison

’Ashes Of Dreams We Let Die’ is an E.P from American alternative rock singer-songwriter Brandon Caulfield. Initially planned as Caulfield’s third studio album titled ‘Fireflies & Bedouins’ and following the completion of the album, Caulfield came to the decision to change it to an E.P, not only making that decision but deciding to scrap at least half of the songs that had already been completed and instead deciding to record the whole E.P as a complete with a larger backing band. The album was initially recorded between August and November 2011 and saw Caulfield work on specific songs for weeks in an attempt to perfect the lyrics and melodies, the title track in particular took Caulfield over 3 months to finish writing but as Caulfield finished up the recording of the album he decided that it wasn’t good enough, it didn’t have the effect that he wanted and so he came to the decision to scrap the finished version of the album and re-write the songs, deciding to make it an E.P rather than a full length album and also deciding to record the album with a new backing band titled ‘The Midnight Runners’. The E.P was recorded in less than a month, from the end of February to mid-March and was given a release date of March 25 2012, just a week after the release of the lead single, ‘Fireflies & Bedouins’.

Album Themes And Composition
‘Ashes Of Dreams We Let Die’ is an E.P with minimal production, the songs on the E.P are pretty much the same as they sounded during the live recordings, not an awful lot of editing went on in the studio which leads to the E.P having a raw and quite typical sound which will no doubt make the live performances of the songs on tour sound almost like-for-like with the studio version of the songs recorded for the E.P. A number of the songs theme’s relate to a war-type situation, most notably ‘Fireflies & Bedouins’, ‘Battle Scars’ and ‘They Can’t Take Me Away From You, Forever’ and the energy of the band give the songs a little more power with a whole host of instruments played on the album including, ukulele, harmonica, organ, accordion, saxophone, flute and violin. But it’s core elements remain the guitars and vocals, they bring the songs atmosphere’s, lyrics and theme’s to life and Caulfield’s vocals switch between soft rock to growling folk vocals throughout and remain a standout of the E.P.
The songs primary themes are rooted in regret, loneliness and frustration but there’s always that sense of something more, that glimmer of hope or light most evident on ‘Battle Scars (I’m Coming Home)’ as Caulfield sings about returning home to his wife after fighting in a war, “So now I’ll make up for my time away from you/My battle scars will fade over time too/I’m coming home, I’m coming home, I’m coming home it’s true/I’m coming home, I’m coming home and baby I won’t stop holding you.” Which gives a sense of relief if only for a brief moment as the next song poses a question of loneliness, “Does This Darkness Have A Name?” The mix of themes work together but the primary theme is that of a depressing nature, but did you really expect anything else from Brandon Caulfield?

Songwriter’s Analysis
“It was a frustrating time working on this, I think the first recording session was in August and the songwriting process started way before then. There was a certain feel that I had for the album and I worked hard on trying to achieve that but when I finally finished up recording the album and I had that first listen to it I knew right away that I wasn’t gonna be releasing it as it was, I had recorded it entirely solo and sure enough I was pretty disappointed with the outcome after almost four months of hard work.
So instead I decided to leave it for a little while before coming to the decision to record the album with a group of musician that I had known for a little while now, I reworked the songs and eventually had about six or seven songs that I felt were pretty good which ultimately ended up on the EP, it was frustrating to throw away the other seven or eight songs that I had written for what was to become my third studio album but for me it’s mostly about the output and in the end I came to the decision that those other songs weren’t good enough. If I don’t think that the songs are up to scratch then I’m not putting anything out there.

Five songs on the E.P were written for what would have been my third album, the difference is that they’ve been re-written and I’ve gone with a much more interesting route with them, taking a more rambunctious folksy feel with my backing band, when it came down to recording the E.P we just played like a garage band without any real pressure and I think that comes across on the E.P and as a result I’m much happier with the E.P than I was with the album.
There’s an approach to the songwriting that I’ve taken on even more so with this work, it’s much more of a storyteller vibe, its core influences come from that late 70’s Americana type thing and primary influences from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.
I think the stories within the songs paint a picture that can hopefully pull people in and the songs, in my opinion bring a good close to this chapter of my life, it may be a while before I record something again and so I hope and I believe that these are quite possibly the best set of songs that I’ve written.”

1. Fireflies & Bedouins

As these beautiful fireflies pass before my dreaming eyes
I gaze across this field of green and wonder what might have been
If my life had passed by the way that I planned
Maybe I’d never have conquered this promised land
I’ll close my eyes as I feel a tear drop
And think to myself ‘It’s lonely at the top’

And I’ll lead my men into battle as the Bedouins back down
And the fire that we caused will slowly rise upon this humble town
I’ll just close my eyes for the element of surprise
Yeah, I’ll close my eyes for the element of surprise

So this war will be won, the damage will be done
Our land is ours once more my friend
But let’s not be blind sighted, let’s not pretend
That everything is perfect, when nothing ever feels right
We’re lonely and we know it, we need love to save us tonight

While some fathers return home to the smile of their children and wives
I’ll lay on the cold and empty floor thinking, ‘what happened to my nine lives’
I’ll wake in the morning with the sun as my only friend
I’ll set out on my day ahead and hope that this is all pretend

As the beautiful fireflies fade and the Bedouins make their way
This scene turns from a blue sky and it’s turning into grey
But the sun is now replaced with the beating of the rain
As we face our battle and face a whole world of pain

I’ll lead my men into battle as the Bedouins back down
And the fire that we caused will slowly rise upon this humble town
I’ll just close my eyes for the element of surprise
Yeah, I’ll close my eyes for the element of surprise

So it looks like the end is nigh and there’s nothing left to do
I could put my weapons down again but I remember I’m still fighting for you
A spark will ignite in my empty soul and the thought of you will be enough to break my fall
So I won’t back down until the very end and I may be alone now
But I know that our love will transcend

Suddenly there was silence and the scene was empty and dark
It seems like enough was done and I thank you for igniting that spark
I know I’ll never see you again when my memory of you is all that remains
No matter how much I try to move on, it feels like your pulling the reigns

And now all that I see, are fireflies, you and me
And I’ll still close my eyes for the element of surprise
I’ll still close my eyes for the element of surprise
When I close my eyes, all that I can see are fireflies, you and me

2. They Can’t Take Me Away From You, Forever

Oh look at that girl, she sits down at the river bank
Telling stories of loneliness and worry that have passed in time
And I smile as I see her talking and skipping rocks across the water
And wonder how I get to call her mine

The things that once confused me, make perfect sense to me now
I couldn’t figure things out back then
But that girl showed me how
She showed me how

The nights they got much darker and the rain began to pour
As we got back home I found a letter, waiting by the door
It requested my services and told me I had to fight
I hid the letter from her just so I could think things through the night
But the truth is that I knew the answer and now I have to go

I sat her down to explain that I didn’t want to leave her
But this something I have to do, I don’t know what the future holds
But I’ll always be thinking of you
She said we could run away together someday
And start our life somewhere new
I told her that’s a beautiful fairytale
But they don’t always come true

So I walked out the door and she dropped to her knees
Screaming and shouting with begging pleas
Please don’t me now, please come back
I need to do what’s right this time, we’re all under attack

I resisted temptation and did what was right
I prayed that she’d understand someday, I prayed every night
I was scared just like she was, scared of losing her now
But I did what I had to do, I left somehow

She’d send me her letters and her words to keep me strong
I felt so scared of not returning safely, I was scared all along
But her belief in me, her belief in us
Helped to keep me fighting, her belief was enough

I would write back to her, telling her that I’m fine
Telling her that I believe in us, that I’ll be home in time
With my final words, I jumbled together, I sighed as I wrote
They can’t take me away from you … forever

3. Haunted Memories Of A Former Hero

It’s just the same old darkness that casts a shadow over this old town
These streets are cold and empty and there’s nothing to be found
The dreams we had as children slowly turn to rust
The places we once spent our youth have now bitten the dust
Familiar echoes down the street of children having fun
Are replaced by an eerie silence that fades like the setting sun

Leave fall from the old oak tree’s and they scatter in the wind
Raindrops hit your window pane like tears that fall perfectly still
Your nights alone by candlelight remind you of your past
They remind you of people you once knew, relationships that never last
If you knew then what you know now then your feelings would be easier to show
But hindsight haunts us all someday like the memories of the people you used to know

The sun it never rises in this old town anymore
It’s replaced by haunted memories of your youth and nothing more
Everything that you once knew and everything that made you feel safe
Have gone away like pictures burnt, like old friends, like former sins
Just blowing away like those green leaves scattering in the wind

Everyone you used to know has slowly gone away
Their promises of growing old together have faded like the day
Over time ties will be broken just like those words that once were spoken
But when the answers are so hard to find, you can search your heart and search your mind
But the only thing that seems so clear, is that you’re on your own and no one is near

The river shimmers in the winter breeze and the wind whistle’s loudly too
You start to wonder what you’re still doing in this lonely world
Why you’re still alive when this pain and regret slowly haunts you
You wonder if it’s repentance that keeps you here
And that you can someday feel remorse from your former sin
But then it soon becomes clear
This is your very own hell that your living in

Well the sun it never rises in this old town anymore
It’s replaced by haunted memories of your youth and nothing more
They say your hometown is where everything feels safe
But my hometown is just like me, a vision that I’m too scared to see
Everything I dreamed of has turned to memories and dust
And the heart that I used to own is crumbling like rust

4. Ashes Of Dreams We Let Die

When we walk
We ignore the awkwardness and we never talk
We see that we’re fading but we just say nothing
Nothing in the hope that this silence just fades away
And this emptiness
It reaches to my heart and rips it out of my chest
It’s beating stopped somewhere along the road
And faded over time
Just like the days when you were mine

The summer air
It just fades away along with our despair
The beating in our hearts is no longer there
And we can’t afford to hold on for much longer
They say separation makes us grow stronger
But I can’t help but feel like we don’t even try
And we’re just left with the ashes of the dreams that we let die

Staring across the room
We never say a word to one another
And we just let the silence linger in the air
All the little things that we know, the secrets that we kept
Fade away and with tired eyes, tired souls, tired minds, we slept

And we’re falling apart
And fading away
We can’t remember the memories of yesterday
There’s nothing there
Not a fire in your soul or a spark in your eyes
Just the ashes of dreams we let die

And we’re falling apart
And fading away
We can’t remember the memories of yesterday
There’s nothing there
Not a fire in your soul or a spark in your eyes
Just the ashes of dreams we let die

5. Footprints Of My Soul

Just forgive my horror, and forgive my dark soul
You shouldn’t have caught me
Should have just watched me fall
Because now I sit alone in my empty house
Just watching the world pass by

And nothing is clearer than the life that I’ve led
I’ve fought my battles and now I have bled
I’m dying now, there’s nothing that can be done
Just take your things and please, just run

My sins are catching up with me
There’s nothing left for us to be
Just leave me here
And I’ll start all over again

As I lay here, dying slow
My blood is dripping to the floor
Remember me for what I was
And as I fall … remember the footprints of my soul

I’ve put you through hell and still you stayed true
You held my hand as I held yours too
And through the changes that went on with me
You still believed that I could be free

Free from the pain that I wanted to be relieved
I couldn’t figure out why you still believed
I battled my Demons
And in the end they won

As I lay here, dying slow
My blood is dripping to the floor
Remember me for what I was
And as I fall … remember the footprints of my soul

Kiss our child goodnight from me
Ask him to forgive my sins, he’ll one day see
And I’ll pray for him, I’ll pray for you, but not for me

As I lay here, dying slow
My blood is dripping to the floor
Remember me for what I was
And as I fall … remember the footprints of my soul

The end is nigh and I feel fine
I’ve lasted longer than I thought this time
But I’ll be around to soften your fall
Just remember the footprints of my soul

6. Battle Scars (I’m Coming Home)

A solitary kiss, like a whisper in the wind
Making my way home, for my real life to begin
And nine years away seems like forever and a day
But your smile it greets me as I wait by the garden gate

The sun beats down on the perfectly cut grass
Kids running through sprinklers is a memory that will last
Nine years of fear and war are behind us now
We can be the family we always wanted
And you can show me how

A goodnight story that I never told my sweet baby girl
A candlelight dinner that I missed from the other side of the world
I’m here now and I promise that you will now be so cared for
I’ll cherish every second with you, things won’t be like before

So my fighting days are over but I still bare the scars
It’s gonna take a while to heal but the fact that I’m still alive
Well … I thank my lucky stars
I’ll hold your hand every night as you sleep
You have every part of me and it’s yours to keep

No more time to worry if I’ll ever make it home alive
No more time for fear, the thought of you helped me to survive
It would always be so scary not knowing what is next for you and me
But my sweet angel I’m home now and that’s where I’m always gonna be

A goodnight story that I never told my sweet baby girl
A candlelight dinner that I missed from the other side of the world
I’m here now and I promise that you will now be so cared for
I’ll cherish every second with you, things won’t be like before

And so now I’ll make up for my time away from you
My battle scars will fade, over time too
I’m coming home, I’m coming home, I’m coming home it’s true
I’m coming home, I’m coming home and baby I won’t stop holding you

7. Does This Darkness Have A Name?

The light beats down on the places we once knew
So many memories gone, replaced by so few
The questions that I had in the beauty of my youth
They’re buried away now and I’ll never know the truth

What will become of us and the things we once had
Will it fade like memories, memories of yesterday
Or will it resurface in my thoughts until the day that I die
Will it haunt me forever, knowing that I didn’t try

Everything has changed along with the things we once shared
The plans that we made have learnt to fade
The dreams that we shared, leave me alone and scared
What have I become, what have I done
What have I become, what have I done

Is this really me or a shadow of who I used to be
The echoes in my misery haunt me every night
Your face is plain and your features are dying every day
I’m trying to hold on but your memory is fading away

I feel like I’m dying and nothing can break my fall
I feel insignificant and I feel so small
I sometimes wonder if I’m to blame
I wonder, does this darkness have a name?

It’s one thing in my life that made me feel safe
Like I had something to share and someone to care
And as we made our promise in the naivety of our youth
We swore nothing would ever change over time
You swore that I was yours and you were mine

But I feel like I’m dying and nothing is gonna break my fall
I feel insignificant, meaningless and small
I find myself lost in thoughts as I wonder who is to blame
I’m wondering if anybody wins in this lifelong game
I’m wondering, “does this darkness have a name?”

8. This Land Is Your Land (Woody Guthrie Cover)

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream water
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin', that ribbon of highway
I saw above me, that endless skyway
I saw below me, that golden valley
I said this land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sand of her diamond desert
And all around me, a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me

Down in the city, in the shadow of the steeple
By the relief office, I saw my people
As they stood there hungry I stood there whistling:
This land was made for you and me

As I went walking, I saw a sign there
And on that sign it said "Private Property"
But on the other side it didn't say nothin'
That side was made for you and me !

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back, cuz
This land was made for you and me

The sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
As the fog was lifting, a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me

Glamazon: Oh my goodness, I think I just had a heart attack. "Footprints Of My Soul" and "Does This Darkness Have A Name?" are my favourites, chilling, yet beautiful lyrics. I can't express my love for your music enough... I hope I'm still considered your number one fan. And if not, then I shall have to kill whoever this person is.

Glamazon: Don't worry sweetheart, I'm not after your man or anything. I will gladly let no one else but you be the bigger fan. Considering he's your husband and all... that would be completely unfair of me. ;)

Katie: Actually beautiful. One of the purest artists I know of. You really are wonderful, and this just cements your place up there. Your music always speaks to people in a way that generic pop just cannot, and I think that is what makes it special in my eyes. This is no exception at all. A truly wonderful collection of music from an amazing artist, and long may it continue. We all waited too long for this one, let's hope we get a full length album sometime soon. This has only made me want it even more :)
