The Final Curtain Call: Velvet Ledger’s Exit Interview

Zound: Lia, eight singles, five EPs, a #1 EP, two Top 10 hits—and now you’re hanging up the microphone for good. The industry is in shock. Why pull the plug on Velvet Ledger right at the peak?

Lia: Look, let’s cut through the standard PR spin. I didn’t start Velvet Ledger to win a Grammy, collect platinum plaques, or build some pristine legacy in a corporate archive. I stepped under that spotlight because a crowded bar at 1 AM is a miserable place to strike out, and stage lights are the ultimate wingman. Velvet Ledger was born out of a desire for sticky synth riffs, heavy basslines, and zero shame. It was a high-velocity numbers game. A new city every night just meant a brand-new roster of potential options, and as long as the bass kept driving, I never went home alone. I accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

Zound: You’ve had major commercial traction, but you never released a full-length album. Is there any regret there?

Lia: Yeah, part of me regrets not recording a proper full-length album. But here’s the truth: I couldn't find a single label that actually shared my vision. Every executive who sat across from me wanted to sanitize the edges, tone down the lyrics, and pretend my gigs were anything other than what they actually were—part arena pop concert, part personal hunting ground. They wanted sanitized pop; I wanted music engineered to lower inhibitions until the house lights came up. If I can't do it entirely on my terms, with the volume maxed out and my motives completely transparent, I’m walking away.

Zound: So the music world loses one of its most unapologetic performers. What happens to Lia now that the tour bus is parked?

Lia: There will be one final single called "Last Straw". Then the spotlight might be changing, but the playbook stays the same. I’m just upgrading the setup: I’m taking the revenue from those Top 10 tracks and launching an invitation-only nocturnal club network. No corporate interference—just top-tier sound systems, heavy bass, and an environment built specifically for high-stakes human interaction.

Zound: Good luck with your next endeavours!

Christophe Campaert: Ha, I know that trick, that playbook is almost as old as me. Someone's looking to boost up her market value. Mario Abraham: Or, she's just going DIY. Christophe Campaert: We'll see when her next record comes out and who's releasing it.

I really meant it, but maybe fate is on my side and has given me a new contract. Who knows what will happen next. I'm open to anything :D
