About The Big Green Apple in their own words
The band was formed in Whanganui, a quiet river city in the North Island.
Kahu and Phoebe were working seasonal jobs at a local orchard packing export apples. Late one night during an grueling 12-hour shift, Kahu accidentally dropped a crate of Granny Smiths down a conveyor belt, causing a chaotic, rhythmic clatter that sounded bizarrely like a post-punk breakdown. As the apples rolled across the concrete floor, Kahu turned to Phoebe and yelled over the machinery noise: "We're doing this in the name of the big green apple!"
Phoebe laughed, but the name stuck. They recruited Milo, who was fixing broken amplifiers in his garage, and Tama, whom they met playing jazz at a local café. They moved into a rundown wooden flat near Whanganui’s riverbank and converted one room in the shed into a recording space using egg cartons and old wool blankets.
They travel in a converted hybrid van named "The Granny Smith," to play gigs at community halls and indie record stores.
