About Sola in their own words
Growing up in a coastal town in Cornwall, Sophie spent much of her childhood around salt air and quiet landscapes. Her mother worked as an illustrator, and her father ran a small maritime vintage shop. Introspective and observant, Sophie found solace early on in music, learning to play a battered classical guitar left behind in her father's store.
During her late teens, Sophie felt deeply disconnected from her peers—a feeling of emotional isolation despite being surrounded by people. While studying creative writing in London, she spent her evenings writing songs in a cramped top-floor bedroom in Deptford. She took to calling her internal creative space her "Sola state"—a blend of her name, Sophie, and the word solitude ("so-alone"). To her, solitude was not a flaw or a burden, but a space where truth could be spoken without noise.
When she began performing at open mic nights in East London, she dropped her surname and adopted Sola. It reflects her vulnerability and self-reliance.
