About Drugs are bad, mkay? in their own words
Formed deep in the lush, sun-drenched coastal mountains of Latin America, "Drugs are bad, mkay?" is a reggae collective founded on the most ironic piece of pop-culture wisdom of the late '90s. Their sound is a deeply spiritual, heavy-bass, and hypnotic blend of roots reggae, dub, and traditional Latin percussion. The trio originally crossed paths in an underground studio nestled between coffee plantations and surf shacks. Each member had spent years backing other major touring acts across the region, but they bonded over a shared exhaustion with the heavy, self-destructive party culture of the local touring scene. They wanted to create music that offered the same euphoric, transcendental release as any vice, but fueled entirely by natural high vibes, Caribbean rhythms, and herbal tea. Their lyrics playfully weaponize the anti-drug PSA trope, turning it into a tongue-in-cheek mantra for mental clarity, peace, and spiritual awakening.
